What is castle guimaraes?

Castle Guimaraes is a historical monument located in the city of Guimaraes, Portugal. It is one of the most important medieval castles in the country and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001.

The castle was built in the 10th century by Count Mumadona Dias as a means of defence against the Moors who were invading the country. Over the years, it underwent several renovations and expansions by various kings to become the castle we see today.

The castle has a rectangular-shaped keep, several towers, and a barbican, which was added in the 14th century to fortify the castle's defences. It has two entries: one located at the northern side and another located at the southern side.

Inside the castle, visitors can explore the various rooms and chambers, including a chapel, a hall of arms, and a central courtyard. There is also a museum located within the castle, which displays artefacts related to the castle's history.

Visitors can reach Castle Guimaraes by car or by public transport. Guided tours are available, and there are several restaurants and cafes located nearby for those who wish to enjoy a meal or refreshments after their visit to the castle.
